Suggested by some to be the major cause of absence from work, poor manual handling techniques can and do cause long term disabilities. Teaching staff to lift from a bend the legs, straighten the back principal may help but is not suitable for all situations. The speaker will describe a process carried out within his company to identify manual handling problems and assessments to identify not just the risk but practical solutions to implementing a safe system of work. Fall from height are the major cause of death within construction sites. Many people will understand the need for controls to be put in place and support that action. A recent advertising campaign by the HSE stresses the number of injuries caused by people falling from a short distance, off a step ladder or a small plat-form. The work at height regulations have no lower limit at which protection is required as in previous legislation. Also various protective devices are used to protect employees but in practice could cause injury. The speaker will discuss all aspects of safety when working at heights. view PDF

European legislation and How it effects choosing the correct PPE, Covering type 5 & 6 legislation and how the standards have changed since 1997 to today
The minimum requirements for limited use, chemical protective clothing (PPE) tested to Type 5 and 6 Standards have changed since 1997, however some garments available for purchase today still only meet previous test requirements. This presentation aims to educate buyers of Type 5 and 6 protective clothing on the changes to the legislation and what to look out for in a garment to ensure that it complies. The workshop will discuss the pitfalls of garments tested to previous standards, the benefits of the new minimum test requirements and the meaning of published chemical permeation data ( Actual , ASTM and the EN). The speaker will also advise on best practice procedures for putting on and removing (donning and doffing) protective clothing to minimise risk of exposure to occupational hazards. This includes the importance of selecting properly fitting and compatible PPE, the order of dressing and how to minimise risk to the wearer and others at the time of undressing. view PDF
